Why did the old man want to catch the fish?
The old man wanted to catch the fish so that he could prove that he was not weak and that he can actually catch one. He had not caught a fish in 84 days and wanted to be successful. Santiago wants to be like the great DiMaggio because he was very successful himself, despite his injury. This is why Santiago wanted to catch the fish.
Symbolism:
The lions: The lions: The lions are an important symbol in "The Old Man and the Sea" because they are a memory from when he was a child. The reason it was a lion instead of any other creature would be because lions are very strong. They are hunters and they are loud. “He only dreamed of places now and of the lions on the beach.” (pg. 27)

Baseball: Baseball is a very important symbol in "The Old Man and the Sea" because the old man was very much like DiMaggio. DiMaggio had a bone spur but was successful and the old man's hands were in no good condition to fish, but he was successful. Despite DiMaggio's bone spur and Santiago's hands, they both showed great endurance. “But I must have confidence and I must be worthy of the great DiMaggio who does all things perfectly even with the pain of the bone spur in his heel." (pg. 64)
Setting:
Setting is a time and place in which something is taking place. The setting in "The Old Man and the Sea" is Havana, Cuba in the 1940's. “The successful fishermen of that day were already in and had butchered their marlin out and carried them laid full length across two planks, with two men staggering at the end of each plank, to the fish house where they waited for the ice truck to carry them to the market in Havana.” (pg. 14) It is important to understand the setting because you need to know how Cuba was in the 40's so that you can understand and link together some of the elements and symbols of the story. The time in which this took place is important to the development because it could affect the people and the certain customs in Havana.
